A month a go I attended a #DVForum on Domestic Violence in Australia, thanks to The Nappy Collective – read original post here. I met some inspiring people on the night – Rosie Batty, Giaan Rooney and Detective Superintendent Rod Jouning.
In honour of women all around Australia, especially after the recent events with the murder of teenager Masa Vukotic, who was innocently walking through a park. And facts that have surfaced about Adrian Bayley, who murdered Jill Meagher I want to share basic facts EVERY Australian should know about domestic violence.
1 in 5 women have suffered at the hands of domestic violence in Australia. Do you know these women? I know these women as they surround me in everyday life –
- They are mothers
- They are sisters
- They are friends
- They are daughters
- They are cousins
- They are homemakers
- They are professionals
- They are wealthy
- They are intelligent
Are you afraid to speak up? Here are places that can help you
Thank you for taking the time to read and share this important information on domestic violence in Australia.

Above all those other things they are-they are PEOPLE and deserve the same level of respect and safety as everyone else. These statistics are horrifying.

Scary, true and not getting any better Amy, as you know with all your campaigning on the subject.
Such an important message – the stats really are horrifying.

Scary but true.
Gosh those stats are shocking aren’t they! It is scary times to be female at the moment! I worry for my 19 year old daughter and have no choice but to warn her not to walk alone at night, not to walk through isolated areas etc. As for domestic violence, I wonder what it is about society today that these statistics seem to have escalated. 🙁

I know what you mean about trying to teach your girls the best way to stay safe. Not sure if it is getting worse or if women are feeling more confident to report it.
Gosh it’s so sad to read those stats, I really hope my daughter is never a statistic. x

I hear ya Em. I worry about my daughters daily as they are often out and about on their own – like catching a bus to school etc, which they should be able to do.
I love that you have shared where to go for help, support, advice. We need to share more of this. Speaking out can be terrifying. People need to know that there are professionals who can support them and get them through this. Those statistics sadden me deeply. Thanks for sharing. #teamIBOT

The stats scare the bejeezers out of me and they only seem to be escalating too. Thanks for hosting Renee #IBOT
the statistics are very revealing. Thank you for sharing this!

Very scary and very true. We need to head in the opposite direction.
I think every post on this helps! I recently wrote one on my dad breaking his restraining order.
Caught 10 minutes of Dr Phil today. There was a woman on there saying she believes a man can slap a woman if she talks back. Then when her boyfriend did slap her she settled out of court with him for $3000. She was a joke. She was promoting that way of thinking online but not living it and she couldn’t see how she was a hypocrite. ARGH! idiot!

One of these horrible subjects that needs to be discussed with everyday people as it affects, everyday people.
So wonderful that you are bringing awareness to this problem. Like you said, it can be anyone. Domestic Violence crosses all barriers… race, age, economic status, etc. does not matter. It happens everywhere.
Absolutely Kim, and the stats just keep getting worse, heading in the wrong direction
From a male perspective, domestic violence makes me sick. Current society attitudes and influencing factors like excess alcohol play a part but never never should men manhandle women no matter what the lead up circumstances were. It’s cowardly and so wrong.. Parental guidance and education hereon is vital with our kids. It’s never too early to raise (as often as necessary) the do,s and don’t,s with your kids and talk through with them the hugely important correct path to follow.
Thanks for the male perspective Pete. It has to begin at home and continue with society. Men to to stand up to men who do this and let them know that it is not acceptable.
So scary but we so need to be aware and we need to also know what to do if (a) we are faced with and (b) we can see it happening to someone else.
Leanne @ Deep Fried Fruit
Thanks Leanne. It is the know ing what to do that most people have no idea. It happened to a girlfriend recently and I wouldn’t have had any idea where to turn or who to turn to.
Thanks for bringing these stats to our attention, Nat. It really is distressing how there are so many women out there who are suffering in silence.
Grace recently posted…FYBF – With Every Season
Too many women suffer in silence and they think their options are limited. I am not saying there is a right way to go about this but it has to change as it seems to be getting worse.
What frightening statistics that need to be change. Thanks for bringing my awareness to this.
