Mental illness is not a disease you can catch and it is not a part-time condition – it is there all the time and only the person can see it.
No one ever really knows what goes on behind closed doors – the closed doors of someones mind. From the outside, many people suffering mental illness become experts at hiding it, allowing very few people to ever truly understand what is happening behind their closed doors.
The difficulty is finding ways to escape the thoughts that can stay constant in the mind.
All aspects of life can create challenges but most of these you can remove yourself from the situation. You can leave your partner, walk away from your children, quit your job, move to a new location, distance yourself from friends and the list could go on forever. You can never escape from yourself, from your thoughts, from your inner voice. Mental illness takes control of you, takes control of your thoughts and takes control of your inner voice.
Sadness can run deep to the core, infecting every part of the body, sometimes never being able to recover again.
Sit quietly for 30 seconds (yes just 30 seconds) and try to escape yourself. It is very difficult to do.
Understand that mental illness kills many Australian lives every year and destroys many families in the process.
